Roundabout to Replace Stop Signs in Wirtz

The intersection of Brooks Mill Road and Burnt Chimney Road will be receiving an upgrade ahead of schedule. VDOT announced that the project for constructing a roundabout to replace the four-way stop signs at the intersection have been expedited from 2025 to 2022.

According to www.SmithMountainLake.com and the Virginia Department of Transportation, plans for the roundabout will include a 130-foot inscribed diameter,15-foot travel lanes, 11-foot lane widths, 4-foot paved shoulders, and accommodations for pedestrians. The estimated cost of the project is $3.9 million.

A fatal crash in 2016 was the impetus for the initial improvement of the intersection. Prior to the crash, only those traveling on Brooks Mill Road were required to stop at the intersection. Now the intersection has a four-way stop sign.

A public hearing for the roundabout will be held at Burnt Chimney Elementary on August 27th. The meeting will have an open-house format and no formal presentation will be given.
