One of the highlights of the SML summer season is attending area Fourth of July fireworks celebrations. These family-friendly events feature live music, food, and activities that culminate in a breathtaking fireworks display. These events provide valuable fundraising dollars to the SML volunteer fire and rescue squads. However, with the onset of the Coronavirus pandemic, our local volunteer departments have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the events as a safety precaution for the community.

The Saunders Volunteer Fire Company hosts the area’s largest July 4th celebrations, which also serves as the department’s largest fundraiser. The loss of revenue from the cancellation will cost them upwards of $20,000.

Funds received from the July 4th event, as well as area donations, help the volunteer fire and rescue departments continue to operate and upgrade equipment in efforts to keep the area safe. The majority of the Smith Mountain Lake area is served by volunteers. The Moneta Volunteer Fire Department canceled its Independence Day celebration as well.

If you’d like to donate your time or money to our local volunteer fire and rescue departments, you can do so by visiting Saunders Volunteer Fire Company at www.svfc-10.com or the Moneta Volunteer Fire Department at www.MonetaFire.com.
