Stunning lake views and private, peaceful forested areas are just part of what makes Smith Mountain Lake a great place to live. The SML area is also known for its many rolling farms, and a local favorite is the Smith Mountain Lake Farm Alpacas.
During this year’s “Fall for Alpaca Days,” the popular farm is pleased to host its annual event, “Santa & the Alpacas,” on December 14-15 and December 21.
About the farm
Smith Mountain Lake Farm is a gorgeous Virginia valley farm with acres of pastoral plains, and home to some of the greatest alpaca lines in the world—brought in from the west in order to produce exceptional genetics without having to transport the alpacas across the country.
The farm typically cares for 40 to 50 alpacas at any given time. These beautiful animals are prized for their coats—known as the “royal fleece,” alpaca wool is softer than cashmere, lighter and warmer than sheep’s wool (without the scratchiness), hypo-allergenic and fire resistant, and comes in 22 natural colors.
Hands-on, interactive tours of the farm are offered daily by reservation. Admission for these 1.5-hour tours is $5 per person, and includes free games for kids.
About the event
“Santa & the Alpacas” will take place on December 14 and 15, and December 21, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to Santa’s Holiday Food Drive, and every child gets a free treat.
You can also shop at the farm’s Gift Shop, which features beautiful alpaca scarves, sweaters, socks, pillows, and blankets, alpaca teddy bears, organic soaps, and much more. Hope to see you there!
