A Beginner’s Guide to the SML Wine Festival

The Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival is the area’s most popular event, garnering attention from wine enthusiasts from all across the country. Annually scheduled on the last weekend of September, the event features nearly 30 Virginia wineries as well as food vendors, artisans, and musicians. This year’s event will be on Saturday, September 28th and Sunday, Saturday 29th, and tickets are currently on sale via the SML Chamber of Commerce website (www.visitsmithmountainlake.com).

If you’ve never attended the event, and you’re interested in attending, this article will give you a brief overview of what to expect at this highly anticipated event.

The SML Wine Festival is a Rain or Shine Event
It might not be a bad idea to pack a poncho or umbrella just in case rain shows up in the forecast as the Wine Festival is a rain or shine event. No refunds are given for inclement weather.

You Can Purchase Private Chalets for Groups
SML Wine Festival Chalets are available for purchase on each day of the event. Chalets are popular for larger groups, entertaining and hosting clients, and private parties. There are three different sizes available and each one includes a tent with private fencing, event tickets, banquet and cocktail tables, and personalized signage.

There’s Live Music Each Day
The main stage of the SML Wine Festival is booked with live music for the duration of the event. On Saturday, September 28th, the main stage will feature Mended Fences (11a-2:30p) and Weird Science (3p-6p). On Sunday, September 29th, the main stage will feature Chad & Daniel (12p-12:45p), Tate Tuck Trio (1p-2:45p), and Fuzzy Logic (3p-5p).

Saturday is the Busiest Day
If you want a more relaxed environment where you can casually speak with the winemakers, plan to attend on Sunday rather than Saturday. However, if you want to mingle with lots of wine enthusiasts, then you’ll want to visit on Saturday.

Pets and Coolers Aren’t Allowed, But You Can Bring a Lawn Chair
If you’d like to relax on the lawn, you’re welcome to bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Coolers aren’t allowed, although there are so many amazing food vendors on site that you’ll want to sample them all. Also, pets aren’t allowed on site, so leave your furry friends at home for this event.

You Can Buy Non-Taster Tickets
Designated drivers and non-wine drinkers can still enter the event by purchasing a non-taster ticket. Non-tasters will receive a different color wristband and will not be able to sample wine from vendors.

You Can Purchase Wine from the Vendors
If you find a wine that you love, then you can buy it from the vendor directly. You can also have your wine sent to the exit tents so you can pick them up on your way out. It’s a good idea to have cash on hand as some vendors may not accept cards or mobile payment.
