If your family is planning a vacation to SML, or you have grandchildren who are coming to visit in the near future, having a list on fun, age-appropriate activities on hand will keep you from hearing your little ones mumble, “I’m bored!” on a regular basis.

Of course, the biggest draw to the area is the lake itself! But if you’re looking to something different to the itinerary, check out the list below.

Halesford Bridge

Halesford Bridge is the unofficial headquarters of Smith Mountain Lake. Here is where you’ll find fun shops, restaurants, mini golf, arcades, pizza, and ice cream. Kids also love feeding the carp by the docks with popcorn or, for the more courageous, by putting peanut butter on their toes.

Smith Mountain Lake National Park

The SML National Park has a public beach, fishing docks, boat docks, picnic areas, playgrounds, and trails for biking and hiking. You can even rent boats directly on-site.

Booker T. Washington National Monument

This historical site is a must-see for kids and adults alike. The Booker T. Washington National Monument is a living history museum where visitors can see how young Booker T. Washington lived. The site includes the home that he and his family shared, the farm where they worked, and an exhibit that includes short films and narratives.

Another great resource for event planning is the website for the Smith Mountain Lake Regional Chamber of Commerce. Here you’ll find a calendar that includes all area events and festivals.
