Get your Camping Gear Ready and Head to SML State Park

Yay, camping season is officially here! This year the Virginia State Parks changed the opening day of camping season to Friday, March 6th. Previously this was always on the 1st of March regardless of which day of the week the date fell on. There are a few exceptions to this new opening date, and Smith Mountain Lake is one of them. Therefore, camping has already begun here locally.

Set up Camp
The Smith Mountain Lake State Park is open from March 1st through the first Monday of December this year. A full-service bathhouse offers campers convenience with a sink to wash dishes as well as hot showers and restrooms. Campers can enjoy access to a free boat launch area and swimming. A variety of gravel pull-through sites are available for RV’s as well as primitive sites for tent camping. Camping site fees are $20 for standard and $30 for water and electricity per night. Bring the fixings for s’mores as each campsite is equipped with a campfire ring.

Have Some Fun
Smith Mountain Lake offers visitors with the second largest freshwater lake in Virginia. Whether you are coming to relax in the shade or play in the sun, there are plenty of fun things to do. Smith Mountain Lake Park offers a amphitheater, hiking trails, boat rentals, swimming and various other special programs and activities to enjoy. The 500 feet beach and swimming pool are the perfect place to have some fun in the water and are both open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The park also has a Discovery Center and Visitors Center to see a variety of displays, as well as a small gift shop.

It’s never too early to start planning a getaway to Smith Mountain Lake. Located only 40 miles from Roanoke and Lynchburg the park is a convenient drive for a short weekend vacation. You can find out more information and make reservations online at www.virginiastateparks.gov.
