There is always something happening at Smith Mountain Lake, giving residents and guests the opportunity to fill their calendars with fun, family-friendly, local events. However, if you’re new to the area, you may not be as familiar with SML’s most popular annual offerings. Below is a list of popular annual events that Smith Mountain Lake is known for so you can mark your calendar and make plans to visit these signature SML events.

Take Pride in Smith Mountain Lake
May 1-May 31, 2020

This annual event brings the community together to clean up Smith Mountain Lake. According to the SMLRCC, last year’s efforts brought more than 325 volunteers to the initiative. Together, volunteers collected 42 tons of debris. Take Pride in SML is held throughout the month of May. Those interested in volunteering are encouraged to pre-register as extra hands are always appreciated.

The SML Business Expo

The SML Business Expo provides the community the opportunity to learn about the services and offerings of area businesses all under one roof. Guests also benefit from lectures and demonstrations on a variety of trending topics. This event is free to the public.

SML Pirate Days
Wednesday, July 15-Sunday, July 19, 2020

SML Pirate Days has grown to become one of the most exciting weekends of the summer! What began as a fun way to encourage local business has now grown into a pirate-themed weekend chock full of events including a Pirate Ball and a Pirate Ship Parade.

Throughout the weekend, participating local businesses decorate their storefronts and offer specials and discounts.

SML Wine Festival
Saturday, September 26-Sunday, September 27, 2020

The most popular event of the year continues to draw in record numbers to our area. Held annually on the last weekend of September, the SML Wine Festival hosts close to 30 Virginia wineries, local artisans, and delicious food vendors. Live music will also be featured on both days from the center stage. Pre-sale tickets are available in August.

SML Chili Festival

Even though November temperatures are a bit cooler, Smith Mountain Lake brings plenty of heat by way of the SML Chili Festival. Visitors line up to sample chili from participants and then cast their votes for “People’s Choice,” “Showmanship,” and “Best Chili.” Local artisans and craft vendors are also onsite.
