Who else is excited about The Blue Ridge Folklife Festival coming up on October 25th? This year marks the 41st annual festival and for many it has become a family tradition to attend each year.
Festival goers will descend upon Ferrum College to enjoy a good time whether they are young or old. While it’s hard to capture all of the various activities that take place during this one-day event, allow me to highlight just a few of my favorites.
The vintage farm and industrial machinery provide for a step back in history as well as numerous demonstrations that feature rock crushing and wheat threshing. In addition to the fabulous machinery on display, you will also be able to view an estimated 300 cars in the Thunder in the Blue Ridge car show.
Working animal demos and contests will highlight sheep herding, mule jumping, weight pulling, coon dog water races and a few other interesting competitions.
You won’t leave the festival hungry, as trying out authentic old-time food is what it’s all about. Hard tack candy, kettle coffee, fried apple pie… and the list goes on with over 20 different old-time food types represented. Over 50 artisans from the region will be on hand to show off their own Blue Ridge folk crafts.
Listen to music at any of the three musical stages that continuously offer a variety of musical styles including old-style bluegrass, gospel and blues. You better bring your dancing shoes as you will either be inspired to tap your toes or swing your partner.
This festival is truly part of what Southwest Virginia’s roots. Ok, now who else is ready for a fried apple pie?
