Perhaps best known for the “Dam Lager,” the Sunken City Brewing Company is a must visit destination at Smith Mountain Lake. Conveniently located along Route 122 at Westlake Towne Center the brewery offers a beer garden, tasting room and pub, as well as a retail store. This 25-barrel and four-vessel brewhouse offers both year-round and seasonal offerings, including Red Clay IPA, Brown Porter, Tartan Tent and Sunktoberfest.

While the microbrewery was founded in 2012, it originally began with the brand’s original brew, the Dam Lager, back in 2010. Smith Mountain Lake resident Jerome Parnell began producing it initially at a Roanoke brewery until the Sunken City Brewery was brought to life in 2012. Costing over $2 million to construct the 8,800 square foot brewery features a brewhouse, fermentation area and canning room. The Sunken City name came from the community of Monroe, which in the mid- 1960’s when the Smith Mountain Dam was built and Smith Mountain Lake was filled became flooded.

German-trained brewmaster, Jeremy Kirby brings his knowledge and skill to create the sought after year round and seasonal offerings, as well as new weekly concoctions. Visit the Sunken City Taproom for a fantastic tasting experience that includes small batch brews. Open Wednesday through Sunday year- round you can find everything from growler nights to small batch releases. If you are looking for a fun way to spend your Friday night then head on down to the Brewery for live musical entertainment and food from Bruno’s GastroTruck.
